ABOUT THE friends of barbara ann mayfield foundation

Friends of Barbara Ann Mayfield Foundation is a foundation set up for the purpose of providing scholarship support and respite care to special needs students and their parents with a specific focus on the autistic population.  Barbara was my baby sister and best friend who died way too soon four years ago. She was a Detroit Public Schools Resource teacher. She loved her students and would do anything to make learning fun for them. Barbara was a die-hard Delta who was affiliated with the Detroit Chapter Of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority at the time of her sudden death.

GOOD NEWS!

My ultimate dream is to build a year-round AI Resort in Barbara’s honor in our home State of Texas for people with Autism. It will be named the BAM Resort. This resort will feature horseback riding, fishing, swimming, hiking, art, crafts, sports, feeding the animals (cows, chicks, and maybe pigs), to name a few. Therapies will be offered: speech and language, social skills, life skills, occupational and physical therapy. The goal is to offer internships to university students majoring in special education with a specific concentration in autism, and offer community service credit to high school students who may need community service hours. Volunteers will be sorely needed at every level of the operation. Additionally, employment opportunities will be offered to everyone including persons with disabilities.

This resort will offer parents up to two weeks of respite with the knowledge that their child will be left in the best possible hands while they get a much needed break.

The plan is to have it fully operational by the Spring of 2010. The resort will be funded by the Friends of Barbara Ann Mayfield Foundation. Log onto the website for updates.
