About Dr. Ellen Mayfield-Fleming
My name is Ellen Mayfield-Fleming and I am a clinical psychologist. I am a former public school teacher and psychologist for Birmingham Public Schools, Birmingham, Michigan before taking an early retirement in January, 2004. However, I do maintain a private practice and see clients two days a week.
EDUCATION
My education includes a B.S. in Vocational Home Economics from Stephen F. Austin State University, Nacogdoches, Texas; M.A. degrees from Michigan State University in Secondary School Administration and Educational Psychology; School Psychology Certification and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Detroit Mercy.
EXPERIENCE
As an accomplished Life Management, Health and Psychology teacher, I have written curriculum for every area taught in the program; I taught all areas in the program including child development, and family life; I taught psychology and health and co-wrote the health curriculum currently still being used as a graduation requirement for Birmingham Schools.
I have taught life skills to students with autism at the high school level.
MY INTEREST IN AUTISM
I have long been interested in autism, writing my first field study paper in the early 80s. More recently, I have worked with autistic students from K-12, providing direct service for several years, first as a teacher, then as a psychologist. I have worked with students, their parents, teachers, paraprofessionals, and support personnel as we assessed their level of functioning, developed programs to support their needs at both the elementary and secondary levels.
As a psychologist, one of my responsibilities was to coordinate MI-ACCESS, a Michigan Based Assessment Program designed to assess students with disabilities and their level of functioning.
